Less than one week til Opening Day.
Updates from South Florida:
*Chris Perez optioned to Triple A Memphis. The pitching staff is set. Yet to be officially announced but Jason Motte will be assuming the closer role. Motte is a big time prospect with a big arm. We will see how he handles the closer role on a consistent basis.
*Joe "Joey Bombs" Mather was projected to be the starting 3rd baseman since Troy Glaus is starting the season on the DL. He is no longer in that position. The starting 3rd baseman on Opening Day looks to be David Freese. Freese was the player that the Cardinals received from San Diego in the trade for Jim Edmonds in December 2007. Joey Bombs has had big time problems with his swing at camp and IF he makes the roster then they will carry him as an extra outfielder.
*The biggest question of the spring has been answered with an explanation point. Is Chris Carpenter healthy and ready to pitch? Resounding YES! Our ACE is back.
*Skip Schumaker is going to be the primary 2nd baseman. I am one of Skip's biggest fans. I love this guy. He is a solid leadoff bat and he plays with tons of heart everyday. No one is rooting for this transition to be successful more than me.
*Still no official word on whether or not BIG name prospect Colby Rasmus will make the roster or not. In my opinion, it is time to get him on the big league squad. It is time to see what Cardinal fans have been hearing for the past 3 years. I want to see him in left field on Opening Day... and my disdain for Chris Duncan has nothing to do with it. I just want to see what Colby is made of already.
*ADAM! No real news about my boy Adam Wainwright but the future Cy Young winner had only an average spring. The Opening Day starter will kick it into high gear come April 6 - of that I have no doubt.
